2/2 at the Turkish Cup

05 September 2020

The team defeats Karayolları by 3-0 in the second day of the Turkish Cup’s Group B.

On the second day of AXA Sigorta Kupa Voley, which is also known as the Turkish Cup, Tigers collect another three points and reach a total of six points, thus securing a spot in the quarterfinals of the Turkish Cup.

In the first set which we started a little uneasily, captain Tijana Boskovic’s block that led us to the technical timeout (12-11) and setter Sladjana Mirkovic’s harmonious game with our attackers were the keys. Our opponents resisted well against us until the end of the set. Yet we managed to take back our control over the set with Yasemin Güveli making the finishing touch through some nice serves. The first set finished 25-23 in our favor.

The second set started easier for us, especially when our young spiker Saliha Şahin scored consecutive attacks and led our way to a 12-2 win at the technical timeout. Alongside with Saliha who scored 4 points in 4 swings in the second set, our American spiker Jordan Thompson scored a total of 5 points. Also, our American middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu showed a remarkable attack performance (3 points) in a short time after she was substituted in the second set. Tigers did not give their opponents a single chance and finished the second set by 25-14.

The team didn’t lose their control of the game in the third set. With young middle blocker Merve Atlıer and opposite Melis Durul’s contributions in the third set, a 3-0 win at the second day of the Turkish Cup was in pockets after an hour and 19 minutes.

Today’s best scorer was Jordan Thompson with 18 points. While Saliha Şahin followed her with a total of 10 points, Tijana Boskovic and Chiaka Ogbogu scored 8 points each.

On the last day of the Turkish Cup’s group stage, the team will face Aydın tomorrow at 14:00 in Cengiz Göllü Volleyball Hall, Bursa. The game will be played behind closed doors.
